Republicans Approve Tax Cut for Billionaires and Large Corporations

Dear Neighbor,

Under the cover of darkness, House Republicans passed a tax cut bill that overwhelmingly favors billionaires and large corporations. Trump’s bill is deeply unpopular, which is why Republicans debated their tax scam through the night while the public slept and passed it early in the morning before anyone knew.

Republicans think that they can pull a fast one over the American people and hide the fact that they are paying for their tax scam by taking health care away from at least 13.7 million Americans and hundreds of thousands of our neighbors in New Jersey.

I was up all night debating this harmful legislation and spoke on the House floor against the Republican tax scam.

The bill now needs to pass the Senate before it can be signed into law by President Trump. The House vote this week is not the end of the road, and we have to keep fighting it every step of the way.

NJ Lawmakers Will Not Be Intimidated

This week, the acting U.S. Attorney in New Jersey, who also happens to be Trump’s personal lawyer, filed charges against New Jersey Congresswoman LaMonica McIver for simply doing her job.

Members of Congress have the authority under the law to conduct oversight visits at federal ICE detention facilities. Oversight is not a criminal offense unless you are living under a fascist regime.

Congresswoman McIver was conducting oversight at Delaney Hall, an ICE detention facility in her district in Newark. She was wrongfully charged with assault. If Trump's DOJ can criminalize Rep. McIver for doing her job, then no one is safe from political retaliation.

This week, I led a letter with Democrats from New Jersey’ Congressional Delegation demanding an end to these retaliatory threats that you can read here.

NO OFFSHORE DRILLING IN THE ATLANTIC

I testified before the House Natural Resources Subcommittee on Tuesday to oppose a Republican bill that would gut offshore drilling protections and reopen the Atlantic Ocean to oil and gas development – even though such drilling is currently prohibited under federal law.

At the hearing, I grilled the Trump administration’s Acting Director of the Bureau of Ocean Energy Management (BOEM) about why the federal government might conduct seismic testing in the Atlantic if drilling is prohibited. He refused to commit to keeping the Atlantic off-limits in the agency’s upcoming five-year leasing plan, and implied the administration is banking on Congress to overturn the ban.

I warned that exposing New Jersey to drilling and the risk of a devasting oil spill will only harm our coastal economy, fishing industry, and marine ecosystems.

I Stand Against Antisemitism

The nation’s capital was shattered by the tragic murder of two young Israeli diplomats outside the Capital Jewish Museum in Washington D.C. It was a vile act of antisemitism and terror that targeted two public servants for representing Israel.

Killing unarmed civilians is not activism – it is violence, full stop. No cause, no slogan, no grievance justifies murder. Antisemitism is not a political opinion. It is hatred and it must be condemned wherever it appears. That this happened in Washington, D.C. is a sobering reminder that even here, antisemitism can turn deadly.
