Legislative Update
1

Dear Friends and Neighbors,

This session has stretched us in more ways than one—but it also reminded me why I ran for office in the first place: to serve, to listen, and to fight for the people of District 17A. Through every committee meeting and every conversation with constituents, one thing stayed clear in my heart—this work matters, because "you" matter.

As Co-Vice Chair of the Human Services Finance and Policy Committee, and as a member of the Environment and Natural Resources and Health Finance and Policy Committees, I’ve had the privilege to dig into the real issues families are facing—access to care, support for seniors and those with disabilities, protecting our lakes and farmland, and ensuring rural voices are heard loud and clear in St. Paul.

I don’t take that responsibility lightly. These aren’t just policy areas—they’re people’s lives. They’re about parents trying to care for their kids, neighbors helping neighbors, and communities trying to grow without losing what makes them special.

Was this session frustrating at times? Yes. The fact that we’re now heading into a special session is disheartening—and frankly, it didn’t have to be this way. We lost valuable time early on that we’ll never get back. But what matters now is how we move forward. There’s still work to do, and I’m here to do it.

I’m committed to helping pass a budget that reflects compassion, responsibility, and common sense—one that delivers the services our communities rely on, without burdening families and local governments with unfunded mandates or higher taxes.

Capitol Explorers from Hutchinson!
1

What a blast it was to welcome the bright and curious students from New Discoveries Montessori Academy to the Capitol this week! Their energy, questions, and enthusiasm for learning made my day. I always say there’s no better way to understand how government works than to see it in action—and these young minds from Hutchinson were up for the adventure. Come back soon, future leaders!

Family Visits That Fuel the Work
1

This week, my son Eli and his girlfriend Kayla traveled all the way from Montana to stop by the Capitol. It means so much to me to have family close during these busy days, and sharing a bit of this experience with them reminds me why I work so hard—to build a better future for the people I love and serve. Grateful for these special moments that keep me grounded.

Family Ties and Focused Work at the Capitol
1

As we await the special session, I’ve been busy diving into important discussions and decisions in various working groups—focusing on making real progress for our communities. One of the highlights has been serving as Vice Co-Chair of the Human Services Work Group, where we’re tackling the policies that matter most to families who depend on these critical services.

And here’s a fun twist: I’m pictured with Chair Senator Hoffman, who’s actually my cousin through marriage! It’s a small world, but having family at the Capitol makes the work feel even more personal and rewarding. Together, we’re committed to getting results that truly help Minnesotans!

From My Heart to Yours: Thank You, District 17A

To everyone back home in 17A: thank you for walking alongside me through this journey. Your prayers, your emails, your conversations at the grocery store or town halls—they keep me grounded and give me purpose. I will continue to serve you with integrity and heart.

We may be entering a special session—but my commitment to you is nothing new. I’m here, I’m listening, and I’m not giving up.

Sincerely,

Representative Dawn Gillman
