When I stepped into the role of Attorney General, I knew that I had to not just enforce the law, but create an office that ensures equity and justice for every Marylander.

That’s why I created the Office of Equity, Policy, and Engagement and introduced legislation in my first year that gave the Office of the Attorney General prosecutorial authority to enforce Maryland and federal civil rights laws.

I expanded our Independent Investigations Division so we can independently prosecute police-involved fatalities – a critical step toward accountability in law enforcement.

And I partnered with the Maryland Public Defender to bring together legal experts, advocates, educators, and public officials to launch the Maryland Equitable Justice Collaborative with the goal of identifying and advancing reforms to address Maryland’s mass incarceration crisis, with the highest racial disparity in our prison systems in the country.

Real leadership means taking bold action, not waiting for permission. That’s how we build a justice system rooted in fairness, dignity, and accountability.
