When
a 7.7-magnitude earthquake hit Myanmar just weeks ago, Mercy Corps teams
acted quickly to deliver critical aid and support for families who had
lost everything.
Our immediate response was possible because of our nearly 15-year-plus
presence in Myanmar. Our established connections with local partners and
existing footprint in affected communities allowed us to quickly assess
and plan to meet the most urgent needs of people.
In every emergency, it’s
our teams, local partners, and the communities themselves who lead the
response—and your support makes that possible. But we can’t do it alone —
we also need the generous support of people like you.
A group of
generous donors has contributed $47,000 to our Matching Gift Challenge
Fund to encourage other supporters to match their gift. That means your
gift today will have TWICE the impact for the communities in 40+ countries
facing crisis. [ [link removed] ]Can we count on you to make a gift — of even just $10 —
that will help our work go 2X as far?

In Myanmar and all the communities we serve, Mercy Corps works
side-by-side with local people to develop solutions to the toughest
crises. That’s why 84% of our team members are from the countries they
serve, and we partner with local organizations who know their communities
best.
Below are two more examples of how our local approach made a difference
when emergencies struck Syria and the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC):
7.8-magnitude earthquake strikes Syria

[ [link removed] ]Two years ago, a devastating earthquake hit Northwest Syria, and
Mercy Corps worked around the clock to deliver aid to those who needed
it most. Despite the complex political dynamics that made it hard to
get aid into the region, we were able to act quickly because we had
been working there since 2008. We started by distributing the supplies
we already had on hand. We also drew on our relationships with local
suppliers, who had established commercial pipelines from Turkey, to
bring in additional supplies for hygiene kits, shelter supplies, and
more as quickly as possible.
Conflict in the Democratic Republic of Congo

[ [link removed] ]As conflict escalated in the DRC, Mercy Corps worked hand-in-hand
with local partners to respond to the urgent needs of families forced
to flee their homes. In Masisi, we’ve taken a coordinated approach to
our response. We are delivering clean water and sanitation services
while our local partners are distributing cash support to help
families better able to afford food. This coordinated approach means
that we’re able to address both food and water security issues.
In the
face of crisis, it’s easy to feel helpless. But with Mercy Corps teams,
local partners, and supporters like you, we can bring hope and relief to
those who need it most.
