Friends and neighbors,

The regular 2025 legislative session has come to a close. Since we were unable to pass all of our budget bills prior to our constitutional adjournment deadline of May 19th, a special session will take place so we can wrap up our work.

There’s a running joke around here that special sessions aren’t all that special – they happen more years than not. Unified Government under the DFL Trifecta last term allowed us to finish up on time but divided government seems to take a little more time. Thankfully, we are hopeful that this year’s special session will commence soon and be brief so we can send the budget for the next two years off the Governor.

By the end of the day Monday, we had passed budget bills on Veterans and Military Affairs [ [link removed] ], Agriculture [ [link removed] ], Housing [ [link removed] ], Judiciary and Public Safety [ [link removed] ], Legacy, [ [link removed] ] and a pensions bill [ [link removed] ] that helps our teachers, firefighters, and police.

We also passed the State Government and Elections budget [ [link removed] ] before adjournment. The bill includes funding for the Help America Vote Act, expands polling places on tribal lands, and streamlines the dispute resolution process for election errors. I’m pleased with the bipartisan work we accomplished this session in the Elections Committee and am proud that we protected the progress we made in election access and security last term. Voting is a right, and in a time where too many are baselessly sewing seeds of distrust in our election processes, I have consistently fought for safe, secure elections that are accessible to Minnesotans. This bill protects that progress and takes some small steps to enhance security even further.

While we are hopeful that wrapping things up in special session will be simple, Republicans have been making things significantly more difficult by going back on their agreements and making demands that are irrelevant to passing a state budget. While I am cautiously optimistic this is coming to an end, my colleagues and I are prepared to fight back if they bring more of these bad faith tactics to the table.

All session long, we’ve seen a clear contrast. I am fighting for a future where we put more power in the hands of working Minnesotans – not powerful corporate interests. I want to give Minnesotans more economic security and I’ve fought efforts to weaken, dismantle, and repeal progress for working families. I will not stick it to working people and will oppose rolling back things that make life easier, like Paid Family and Medical Leave, Earned Sick and Safe Time, and unemployment benefits.

I will keep you updated as we navigate putting together the final pieces of the state budget.

Remembering George Floyd

George Floyd should be celebrating his 53rd birthday this year. Instead, we mark five years since his murder. We've made progress through policies like improving training, codifying de-escalation techniques, and expanding data collection on police misconduct. But we will never forget. We will never stop fighting.
