*LANSING, MICH. *Nine Michigan State Police (MSP) troopers have joined the department’s elite Emergency Support Team [ [link removed] ] (ES Team) following a 10-week intensive training program. A graduation ceremony was held today.
“Our ES Team is called upon in some of the most high-risk and challenging situations police officers face,” said Col. James F. Grady II, director of the MSP. “I have the utmost respect for the training they committed to and completed, as well as their desire to serve on this highly specialized team that handles the most dangerous of situations.”
This class brings the total number of ES Team members assigned statewide to 57, which includes tactical officers and negotiators.
Calls for service are diverse, ranging from high-risk arrest and search warrant service to hostage rescue and responding to barricaded, armed individuals. Since its creation in 1974, the ES Team has responded to more than 4,500 calls for service, with more than half of these being requests for assistance from law enforcement agencies outside of the MSP.
In 2024, the team responded to more than 450 incidents statewide.
