They did it again, John: the
Trump administration just violated a judge’s order by deporting immigrants
to a foreign country without due process.
Last month, federal judge Brian Murphy barred White House officials from
deporting people to countries they are not from without giving them enough
time to object and present their case to a court first.
But this week, Trump’s Department of Homeland Security put a group of
eight immigrants from various countries on a plane reportedly headed to
South Sudan. DHS officials now say they don’t know where the plane is
going, so the judge ordered them to keep these men in U.S. custody once
they land.
Judge Murphy said it plainly yesterday, “The department’s actions in this
case are unquestionably violative of this court’s order.”
While it’s unclear if or how the administration will face consequences for
defying this order, it’s yet another example in a pattern of cases where
Donald Trump and his officials have acted like they are above the law or
court orders.
It is a dangerous sign for our democracy that this executive branch
continues to side-step the judiciary, threatening the separation of powers
to carry out its mass deportation agenda.
