We all know that “school choice” is a disingenuous phrase that simply means funneling public funds to private, for-profit institutions that have no public accountability or oversight.
“School choice” really means that ostensibly educational entities can discriminate and refuse to serve students with physical disabilities, students with mental health issues, students of color, and students from economically disadvantaged homes or whose sexual identity does not meet certain criteria.
“School choice” does not provide equity and does not provide access; the two cornerstones of public education.
The current occupant of the White House just underscored his support of “school choice.”
The current Secretary of Education has been vicious in supporting “school choice” and sending taxpayers’ money to private schools. And here in Montana, the current Superintendent of PUBLIC Education is falling in lockstep with these two and wants to send money appropriated by Congress for our public schools to private schools.
MOFE is adamantly opposed and is working hard to ensure that public funds are given to our public schools and the students who are in such desperate need of aid.
The legislative Education Interim Committee will be hearing an update from OPI on Thursday, June 18. I urge you to demand that Covid 19 funds be used as intended by the United States Congress. You can submit comments HERE (scroll to bottom).
Thank you!
