“I witnessed unimaginable horrors,” said Layla from war-torn Sudan — where tens of thousands of people have been killed, tragically among them the entire staff at a clinic working in the famine-stricken Zamzam displacement camp, since the civil war began in April 2023.

Militants separated Layla from her children and locked her up in an overcrowded prison. She would remain there for nearly three weeks, enduring daily violence and hearing the suffering of other women each night.

She recounted that soldiers “would take young women out into the yard, and all night long we would hear the screams of girls and women. I heard those screams for all 19 days I was in that prison.”

This reality is all too common for women and girls in Sudan. For over two years, they have endured or succumbed to a living nightmare of violence, hunger, disease, and displacement. And with 80% of facilities closed or barely operational, they have next to no access to healthcare.

Our teams have survived over 540 attacks on health clinics throughout the country — and are some of the few providing lifesaving care and humanitarian relief on the ground in Sudan. We operate 90 mobile health units, support over 120 health facilities, and maintain 51 safe shelters for people affected by violence, providing medical care, safe spaces, and counseling.

As one of the remaining lifelines for women and girls living in war-torn countries and enduring humanitarian crises, UNFPA, empowered by supporters by you, provides medical care, shelter, and mental health support to survivors like Layla. Right now, you can extend critical care to those in Sudan and other survivors worldwide. Will you consider making an emergency gift now? [[link removed]?]

Hawaa , a committed UNFPA midwife, explained, "In Khartoum, midwives face constant danger while visiting women at their homes. It's exhausting, but it's our duty." She is one of the midwives supporting 270,000 pregnant women in Sudan, including mothers like Sabreen.

Sabreen , a mother of four, shared her worries: “ I worry about the cold and not having a proper place to lay my baby. We don’t have a home – we sleep on the floor. A mobile clinic examined me and performed an ultrasound. They treated me kindly.”

Supporters like you have been a lifeline for these women and girls during this crisis — providing reproductive health and protection services, counseling, safe spaces, and more.

Your generosity today can ensure women like Layla, Hawaa, and Sabreen are not forgotten. Please make an emergency gift to provide urgently needed care and safety to women and girls in Sudan and around the world. [[link removed]?]
