John,
Today, the United States Supreme Court handed down a landmark 6-3 decision (and one that's long overdue!): Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 protects LGBTQ employees from being discriminated against in employment on the basis of sexual orientation or gender identity! Writing for the majority, Justice Gorsuch said: "An employer who fires an individual merely for being gay or transgender defies the law."
But while this decision is a big Pride month win for our community and strikes a massive blow against discrimination in employment, there's still so much work to be done. We MUST pass a federal non-discrimination law and state non-discrimination laws to fully protect LGBTQ people from discrimination in all its forms. And the best way to do that is to support and train more LGBTQ elected officials who will fight for our rights at all levels of government. Chip in today to help Victory Institute train a new group of LGBTQ leaders who will fight for us! [[link removed]]
Despite this historic ruling, it's still legal for private and federally funded programs to refuse LGBTQ people service, to discriminate against trans students, to force someone into harmful conversion therapy and for the President to ban trans service members. We must continue to protest the racism and police brutality that Black people, including Black LGBTQ people, face every day in America despite legal protections under Title VII. The ruling is a step toward justice, but as the unforgettable Marsha P. Johnson once said: ‘No pride for some of us without liberation for all of us.’
Our LGBTQ elected officials are hard at work repealing discriminatory laws - and Victory Institute is training the next generation of LGBTQ leaders. Will you make a donation today so that we can train more future LGBTQ elected officials that will advance more anti-discrimination laws? [[link removed]]
Thanks again for your support –
