John,
If we thought congressional Republicans’ Billionaire Budget was cruel before, it’s getting even worse.
In an attempt to woo some of the most conservative members of their caucus, Republican leadership appears to be making even deeper cuts to Medicaid, including shifting more costs to the states, which will result in cuts as states will be unable to meet the demand. They’re also trying to accelerate red-tape reporting requirements, which will result in eligible recipients losing their healthcare coverage.
According to the Center for American Progress, these cuts will kill over 20,000 Americans each year. This is policy violence.
Additionally, congressional Republicans are looking to cut SNAP (food assistance) by hundreds of billions of dollars—and, for the first time, requiring states to chip in. This too will result in massive cuts as state budgets are stretched thin.
And why are Republicans seeking to cut more than $1 trillion from Medicaid and SNAP, plus cutting everything from Pell Grants to veterans’ benefits? In order to offset the cost of their massive $5.5 trillion tax handout to the rich and corporations.
This Billionaire Budget reflects the largest transfer of wealth from everyday people to the richest 1% in our country’s history.
We need all Democrats to stay united against this disastrous Billionaire Budget— and we need just four Republicans to join us in order to stop this bill. Add your name demanding Congress reject massive cuts to Medicaid, SNAP, and more to pay for more tax cuts for billionaires.
Healthcare and nutrition are basic needs. Cutting these to pay for more tax cuts for billionaires is obscene.
Another proposed change in the GOP Billionaire Budget is kicking 4.5 million children of immigrant parents off of the Child Tax Credit, while simultaneously increasing the number of lower-income families who do not receive the full CTC because their families make TOO LITTLE money―an average of $23,000 a year.
I’ve introduced the End Child Poverty Act to replace the Child Tax Credit and cover all children, including children from the lowest-wealth families who are left out of the tax credit system. My legislation would create a universal, monthly child allowance of over $400 per child.
Instead of cuts to programs and services that vulnerable families rely on, congressional Republicans are harming their own constituents in order to hand even more tax breaks to their billionaire donors.
Add your name now to demand Congress reject the Billionaire Budget that cuts Medicaid, SNAP, and more to pay for more tax cuts for the rich and corporations.
Together, we’re demanding a democracy of, by, and for the people, not the billionaires.
With you in this fight,
Rashida
