Elderly or Disabled Homestead Exemption: North Carolina allows primary residence property tax exclusions for senior adults at least 65 years old OR totally or permanently disabled individuals. If you qualify, you may receive an exclusion of either $25,000 or 50% of the taxable value of your residence (whichever is greater). More info here ([link removed]) . Disabled applicants must have a medical professional complete Form AV-9A Disability Certification ([link removed].) on their behalf.
Disabled Veteran Homestead Exclusion: North Carolina excludes from property taxes the first $45,000 of assessed value for specific real property occupied as a permanent residence by a qualifying owner (service-related totally or permanently disabled veteran or surviving spouse). Co-owners who are not spouses and who are individually eligible for the benefit will receive the total exemption of $90,000. There is no age or income requirement for this program. Elderly or Disabled Property Tax Deferral (Circuit Breaker): The Circuit Breaker program allows qualifying individuals the option to defer a portion of the property taxes owed on their permanent residence. Current Deferral Limits: Income of $37,900 or less – The portion of property taxes that exceeds 4% of the owner’s income may be deferred. Income of $37,900 to $56,850 – The portion of the property taxes that exceeds 5% of the owner’s income may be deferred.
