Physicians for Reproductive Health
Dear John,
On May 17, a car bomb was detonated outside the American Reproductive Center’s Southern California facility in Palm Springs. The explosion destroyed the clinic and surrounding buildings, severely injured at least four people, and resulted in the death of the individual who carried out the attack. The FBI has identified this as an intentional act of terrorism.
As a physician, abortion provider, and President & CEO of Physicians for Reproductive Health, I condemn this violent attack.
Again and again, our communities are targeted by acts of terror that aim to harass, threaten, and silence us. This is not new. We are no strangers to this violence. These events are not isolated—they are part of a deliberate and ongoing effort to uphold dangerous, fascist ideologies that seek to control if, when, and how people reproduce.
These attacks are direct attempts to strip us of our bodily autonomy and flood our communities with fear. And still, we remain clear in our purpose and steadfast in our resolve: we will not back down.
Providing health care should never come at the expense of our safety and well-being. Accessing care should never be a fearful experience. Our communities deserve better.
What happened in Palm Springs is incredibly dangerous, and its impact will reverberate across our health care landscape. We must recognize that reproductive health care and rights exist on a spectrum. Just as anti-abortion violence is rooted in political ideologies that view bodily autonomy as a threat, this attack is a painful reminder of how far some will go to assert control—even over those seeking to grow their families.
At Physicians for Reproductive Health, we are committed to showing up for our patients, for our fellow providers, and for the future we are building together: a future where every person can access compassionate, comprehensive care free from violence and intimidation.
In solidarity,
Jamila Perritt, MD MPH FACOG
