Ridiculous headlines have become so commonplace since Trump took office that it’s hard to believe he keeps managing to top them—yet he’s done it again.

In a recent announcement, Trump acknowledged that he was accepting a $400 million luxury jet from the Qatari government. Not only does this undermine his supposed “America First” stance, it’s also illegal.

The Constitution's Emoluments Clause prevents federal officials from accepting gifts from foreign governments without Congressional approval. This clause is the reason that, while she was Secretary of State, Hillary Clinton had to refuse a $400 necklace from the Bangladeshi Prime Minister. That’s right — Clinton refused a $400 necklace to ensure she was following the law, and yet Trump is accepting a $400 million plane.

Public service is supposed to be about serving the people, not about collecting perks from powerful donors, cozying up to corporations, or taking thinly disguised bribes from foreign governments. That’s not leadership — that’s corruption.

Trump’s blatant disregard of the Emoluments Clause is a slap in the face to our citizens. He is becoming even more bold in ignoring our constitution, and the very tenants that have been put in place to prevent our country from becoming an oligarchy.
