FAIRFAX, VA. – The Fairfax County Democratic Committee has released the following statement on the passing of Congressman Gerry Connolly at the age of 75.
“We, the Fairfax County Democratic Committee, are devastated to hear the news of Congressman Gerry Connolly’s passing earlier today. Fairfax County and Fairfax Democrats stand on the shoulders of Gerry’s accomplishments. He brought humor, wit, and dedication to every situation he was in. Words cannot express our gratitude for Gerry’s advocacy and service.
When Gerry Connolly moved to Fairfax County, it was a Republican stronghold. Today, through three decades of public service to the people of Northern Virginia, Fairfax County has become a Democratic bastion, and Democrats control 49 of the 50 elected state and local offices in the County. Fairfax will never forget Gerry’s impact, from the Cross County Trail to the Silver Line Metro extension to the Mosaic District. As ranking member of the House Oversight Committee and as President of the NATO Parliamentary Assembly, he was a national and international force to be reckoned with. His visionary leadership has transformed our county and our country into the community it is today.
We are comforted that Gerry is now at peace after a long battle with cancer. Our committee extends its deepest sympathies and condolences to Smitty, Caitlin, and all of Gerry’s loved ones during this heartbreaking time. We look forward to hearing more memories about Gerry in the days to come.”
