John,

Since Dobbs, we have seen exactly what we’ve warned against happen to pregnant people throughout the country. The most current cruelty is a family forced to keep their brain-dead daughter, Adriana Smith, on life support to carry her fetus to term. [1]

Georgia law restricts abortion once cardiac activity is detected. Reported by NPR, Smith’s family said they’ve been told they “are not allowed to stop or remove devices that are keeping her breathing because state law bans abortion after cardiac activity can be detected.” [1] At just 21 weeks pregnant, Smith’s family is kept in an agonizing, incurable situation for the next 19 weeks as doctors say they cannot stop or remove devices that are keeping her breathing.

Being forcibly kept on machines because of a hateful abortion ban violates the right to self-determination.

The anti-abortion group Students for Life is fundraising on the forced treatment of Adriana Smith, claiming they are raising money for Smith’s family [2] though no connection between the family and their group seems to exist. This is simply despicable.

This is just the latest example of pro-life extremists refusing to admit that pregnancy timelines and pregnancy outcomes cannot and will not follow their strict structures. We must stop them and the pain they are so callously inflicting.

Sincerely,

Erin Matson

P.S. There is simply no ‘reasonable’ ban with something as personal and ever-changing as a pregnancy. We believe in all-access abortion care, as early as possible and as late as necessary.
