Health Care Demand &
LMI Training Sessions

Health Care & Social Assistance is the largest-employing industry across every region in Minnesota, playing a vital role in both workforce stability and economic growth. In the Twin Cities Metro [ [link removed] ], it accounts for over 304,000 jobs—more than any other sector by a wide margin—while in regions like Southeast Minnesota [ [link removed] ], it employs more than one in four workers. Central [ [link removed] ] and Southwest Minnesota [ [link removed] ] each report record-high demand, with tens of thousands of jobs and hundreds of openings at any given time, driven largely by an aging population and rising service needs. Northeast [ [link removed] ] and Northwest Minnesota [ [link removed] ] have also seen growth and recovery in key sub-sectors like Long-Term Care and Home Health, further underscoring the industry's importance. As such, Health Care & Social Assistance remains a cornerstone of Minnesota’s labor market, offering opportunities across a wide range of roles, education levels, and wage tiers. Health Care & Social Assistance is the Metro Area's largest-employing industry sector. According to DEED's Quarterly Census of Employment & Wages [ [link removed] ] (QCEW), this industry had 14,721 establishments in 2024 supplying nearly 304,300 covered jobs. As such, over one-in-six jobs in the Metro Area are in Health Care & Social Assistance. The next largest-employing industry, Manufacturing, has 131,500 less jobs.

Central Minnesota's healthcare sector is experiencing significant growth, offering a wide array of employment opportunities across various roles, wage levels and educational requirements. This expansion is driven by an aging population and an increased demand for healthcare services, making it an opportune time for individuals to pursue careers in this field. Across the many different healthcare-related occupations, there were typically just over 2,800 openings at any given time during 2024, a historically high amount.

As the largest-employing industry and one of DEED's Drive for Five [ [link removed] ] sectors of focus, Health Care & Social Assistance is this month's topic for the blog. More specifically, I will be focusing on Long-Term Care and Home Health Care trends and roles. Nursing & Residential Care Facilities alone accounted for over 9,250 jobs in Northeast Minnesota. With Home Health Care Services contributing an additional 700 jobs, the two sub-sectors combined to represent over 7% of total employment in the region in 2024.

Good news for Northwest Minnesota: in 2024, the region's Health Care & Social Assistance employment finally surpassed pre-pandemic levels! As DEED celebrates Health Care month, let's examine the unique recovery patterns across Minnesota's regions, with special focus on Northwest Minnesota's strengths and ongoing challenges.

With nearly 31,500 jobs at 1,765 employer establishments, Health Care & Social Assistance is the largest employing industry in the 23-county Southwest Minnesota planning region [ [link removed] ]. At that level, Health Care & Social Assistance accounted for 18.2% of total employment, identical to the statewide share. That means one in every 5.5 jobs in both the region and state are in Health Care & Social Assistance, highlighting the importance of the industry to the overall economy.

Southeast Minnesota Blog [ [link removed] ]

In Southeast Minnesota, the Health Care & Social Assistance industry creates jobs, drives economic growth and provides stable career paths for tens of thousands of residents. The industry now employs more than one in four workers in the region, offering above average wages that support families and generate additional economic activity throughout local communities. While Manufacturing, Retail Trade and other sectors remain important to the region, Health Care stands out for its significant contribution to Southeast Minnesota's economy, adding new positions even as employers would fill even more openings if more workers were available.
