Hi John,
Since you’ve been following our work, you know that we are working to build a new economy—one that is just, inclusive, and accountable to the people it has long left behind. Over the past year, we’ve supported community-led solutions with Black, Indigenous, and other communities—advancing models and investing in community-ownership and local small business networks.
And right now, this work needs more protection than ever.
A new House bill threatens to grant the Treasury Secretary the power to take away a nonprofit’s tax-exempt status–without due process. This isn’t just a policy shift: it’s a serious threat to organizations that speak out or push for change. If the bill passes, it could be used to block funding, and shut down nonprofits that don’t fall in line with their agenda.
To address the threats of this environment, we are taking proactive steps to protect Common Future from weaponized legal attacks designed to drain our resources. We’re investing in our legal resources, stepping up our cybersecurity measures, increasing insurance coverage, building a crisis management plan, and more. We’re doing everything we can to prepare for the fight ahead.
But these protections come at a cost—and unless more resources are directed by and for communities, the broader movement for economic justice could lose critical momentum.
Will you chip in $25 to support this work? Any amount helps us stay strong, stand firm, and keep building toward a racially just economy.
Whether or not you give today, we’re grateful you’re here. Conservative groups are coming after organizations like ours because we’re winning, so keep sharing, and keep engaging in the movements you believe in. You can explore and support the many partners we work alongside us at commonfuture.co.
In community,
—The Common Future Team
