There are moments that define the future of this country. We’re living through one of them. History will ask each of us to account for what we did to protect Black lives.

Today, the American Muslim community spoke out and demanded action. Organized by Muslim Advocates and the Muslim Wellness Foundation, a coalition of over 95 community organizations from 25 states, DC and Puerto Rico issued a joint statement in support of Black lives, with clear demands for ending anti-Black police violence and redirecting policing funds to community-based services.

Yassin Mohamed. Shukri Ali Said. Stephon Clark. Amadou Diallo. These are the names of Black Muslim mothers and fathers, sons and daughters, who were killed by the police. As a community, we honor their legacy alongside the legacies of George Floyd, Breonna Taylor and countless others by taking action to end the violence that took their lives.

In her recent article, Nailah Dean prays that “even after the news cycle shifts to another concern, Muslims in America never again shy away from protecting Black lives.” There is still so much work to be done to address the many expressions of systemic racism and white supremacy in this country.
