Dear friend,
It just happened again.
An athletic shoe giant today informed us that the company is ending all use of kangaroo skins in its shoes before the year ends.
Today’s announcement comes from ASICS, a giant global athletic shoe maker based in Japan.
This victory comes just days after our recent advance with Adidas, whose executives personally told me at the company’s Annual General Meeting in Germany that it is exiting the kangaroo skin trade and won’t ever resume it.
Today’s revelation marks just the latest win for our Kangaroos Are Not Shoes campaign.
Since we launched the campaign in 2020, we’ve convinced Nike, Puma, New Balance, Diadora, Adidas, Sokito, and now ASICS to abandon the skin trade for kangaroo skins. That’s a roster of the biggest global brands involved in manufacturing and selling athletic shoes.
Now our attention turns to ASICs sister company in Japan: Mizuno, which maintains more than a dozen models of soccer shoes made from the skins of the iconic marsupials of Australia. The wild animals are shot in the dead of night, and the shooters leave a trail of orphaned joeys after their blaze of gunfire quiets.
This series of outcomes with these enormous brands didn’t happen by accident. It’s happening because of our strategic and intentional campaign to end this trade and to push companies to use recycled products for shoes that are humane and sustainable.
You enabled all of this. You helped us bring unrelenting pressure and unassailable arguments to the doorsteps of these big brands. To ally with partners to conduct global protests, investigations, and legal actions across the world. To build a global coalition and that won’t take “no” for an answer.
But this is just one front of action for Animal Wellness Action. We are fighting for animals and achieving results to quash cruelty and to create a new humane economy. Thanks to your support, we’ve achieved so many wins, including these:
* Secured announcements from the two most important public health agencies in the world – the Food and Drug Administration and the National Institutes of Health – to wind down the use of animals in testing and research and embrace human-relevant science in its wake.
* Passed national legislation to ban animal fighting on every inch of U.S. soil, and now relentlessly working to enforce our laws against cockfighting and dogfighting.
* Enacted the Big Cat Public Safety Act to ban breeding of big cats, mainly African lions and tigers, for use in the pet trade and as commercial props at roadside menageries in the United States.
There’s so much more work to conduct. Nixing the massive billion-dollar barred owl kill by our own government. Creating an Animal Cruelty Crimes section at the Department of Justice to crack down on all forms of malicious cruelty. Ending all exports of live horses for consumption. Finishing off greyhound racing with our partner at GREY2K USA. And so much more.
Please help us throw everything we can at the problems. To solve these problems. Like no other organization can. [[link removed]]
