Yesterday, after more than 70 days of blockade, five aid trucks finally entered Gaza — where severe shortages of food and essential medicines are critically endangering the lives of pregnant women, mothers, girls, and babies.

But this aid is just a small fraction of what is needed amid the looming threat of famine. With next to no access to clean water, bathrooms, or washing areas — pregnant women have become even more vulnerable to infectious diseases, sexually transmitted infections, acute malnutrition, deadly childbirth complications, extremely underweight babies, and stillbirths.

Adlah , a pregnant mother in Gaza, said goodbye to her children because she thought she was going to die. “If I started to bleed, there were no hospitals. The ambulances had stopped.” She told us, “In the last month of my pregnancy, during the invasion, there was no food at all. I would go to bed hungry. I had no milk, no bottles for my baby. My baby is now one month old, and we are living in a tent at Al-Yarmouk Stadium.”

UNFPA is working to deliver lifesaving aid to mothers like Adlah, with 190 trucks ready to deploy essential supplies, including mobile maternity units, ultrasounds and portable incubators for premature newborns, hygiene products, maternal health medicines, and more.

Relentless attacks on hospitals have left the healthcare system in ruins, with only five hospitals still providing maternity care across the entire Gaza Strip. That makes our work all the more urgent and important. Our matching program has expanded, allowing for your gift to mothers and babies in crisis to be DOUBLED today. Please, will you rush a lifesaving gift before it’s too late? [[link removed]?]

“The lack of hygiene products is one of the main contributors to these conditions,” a doctor from Al-Awda Hospital explained. “We are also facing a critical shortage of supplies, including a complete lack of maternal health medicines, which has led to a rise in miscarriages. We are witnessing a significant increase in low birth weight babies, directly linked to maternal malnutrition and anemia during pregnancy.”

Currently, 57,000 pregnant women in Gaza are severely undernourished, 11,000 are at imminent risk of famine, and 17,000 pregnant and breastfeeding women will need urgent treatment for acute malnutrition — increasing the dangers to mothers and newborns.

“I treated a woman who had struggled with infertility for nearly seven years,” the doctor at Al-Awda Hospital recounted. “She finally became pregnant during the war, but due to the impacts of the siege, a lack of proper nutrition, and the trauma of bombardment when she was forced to flee, she went into premature labour and lost her baby.”

Your immediate support can be a lifeline for women and babies suffering through the conflict in Gaza, the West Bank, and wherever it’s needed most. Every donation today will be matched, doubling your impact toward saving lives. Please rush a 2X-matched gift to deliver lifesaving aid to mothers and babies in dire need. [[link removed]?]

Thank you for being a beacon of hope during this crisis.

We condemn the violence in Gaza, Syria, Sudan, Lebanon, Gaza, the West Bank, and Israel, and hope for a sustained humanitarian ceasefire, the immediate and unconditional release of all hostages by Hamas, and an end to the violence. The suffering must end and peace must prevail.
