This is obviously a very difficult time for the world, and for political organizing. Just as all of us have been quickly adjusting to the new normal of daily life under social distancing given the current COVID-19 virus public health emergency, we will now be holding meetings online.
The risk of exposure to COVID-19 is still very real -- especially out in the streets! Consider getting tested for piece of mind, collect data on this virus, and keep our communities as safe and healthy as we can right now. Be sure to wait at least 5 days after attending a protest to get tested for a more accurate result (false negative rates average 20%, so if you feel even the slightest bit sick please STAY HOME).

Signs hung up at City Councilman Mitch O'Farrell's District 13 office this past Saturday, June 13th at the end of the Rally For Unhoused Black Lives held in Echo Park (organized by DSA-LA, Streetwatch, LA CAN + more). Black people make up about 8% of LA’s population but about 42% of the unhoused population. O'Farrell ironically sits on the Homelessness and Poverty Committee while Los Angeles witnessed yet another 13%+ increase in homelessness. We are continuing to demand the city to #DefundThePolice and reallocate sources and funds to housing and healthcare! See below!

The Black Lives Matter LA-led People’s Budget LA coalition will be presenting the People’s Budget survey results and report (viewable here) to all relevant City Council committee chairs. For more information, check out this press release.
The People’s Budget toolkit contains key messaging, calling scripts, graphics and more so you can help us advocate for a People’s Budget.
ACTION LIST:
- Tune into our budget presentation at City Hall — TODAY, Monday, June 15 at 10am PST. The presentation will be broadcast over the usual city council lines — Channel 35 and the city council website.
- Call into public comment for the Budget and Finance Committee Meeting (see above graphic for how-to) — TODAY, Monday, June 15 at 12pm PST. Urge the Budget and Finance members to defund the police, to prioritize care for Angelenos NOT cops. Tell them that they are responsible to their constituents, not to the LAPD (in fact, a majority of LAPD officers don’t even live in LA). For more talking points, peruse the website!
- Attend the People’s Budget Townhall — TODAY, Monday, June 15 at 7pm PST. Join Zoom call here. Or, watch it live on the BLMLA facebook page.
- Continue tweeting! View general twitter information for this week and use sample tweets and graphics.
- Call and Email Mayor Eric Garcetti and your council member!

STIMULUS SOLIDARITY CAMPAIGN
|
You helped us raise over $25k+ in over a month in our Stimulus Solidarity Campaign and have helped 63 individuals who were excluded from receiving federal stimulus checks. This money is directly helping folks in our immigrant communities and for that we all extend thanks for contributing to this campaign of solidarity, not charity
Ways you can continue to directly support this campaign and the self-organization of immigrant communities as a central struggle in the larger fight against capitalism:

Tuesday, June 9, 2020 at 7-9pm PST
For this Mutual Aid Book Club series, we're discussing Rebecca Solnit's A Paradise Build In Hell. At this event, we're talking about Parts IV and V, on New York and New Orleans, and the Epilogue. Discussion will be pretty informal, and folks of all levels of involvement are encouraged to join!
Zoom connection information will be emailed to folks who RSVP on the day of the event. Please try to RSVP early to make sure we don't miss you!
Unfortunately, physical copies of the book are sold out nearly everywhere. In the short term, we recommend supporting the author by purchasing an ebook. However, if you are not financially able to do this, please reach out to [email protected].
