Andrew Gounardes: Democrat For New York

Friend,

Each June, we celebrate the courageous spirit of New York's LGTBQIA community during Pride month. This year in particular, I’m reflecting on the many Black LGBTQIA advocates who fought to make New York City more inclusive -- advocates like Marsha P. Johnson, a transgender woman who tirelessly advocated on behalf of LGBTQ, homeless, and HIV positive youth, particularly youth of color.

We’ve made huge strides in protecting the rights of LGBTQIA New Yorkers over the past two years. We've passed the Gender Expression Non-Discrimination Act (GENDA), a ban on conversion therapy, and the abolition of the use of “Gay Panic or Trans Panic” defense. But there is so much work yet to be done.

Just last week, the Trump Administration rolled back protections for transgender patients to fight back against discrimination within the healthcare system. This announcement came on the anniversary of the Pulse night club shooting, the same week that two transgender women of color were murdered.

We need to continue the fight towards equality. No matter where you're from, who you are, the color of your skin, or who you love, this is your city.

Happy Pride!

In solidarity,

Andrew
