Dear John,
In 2024, Reform UK’s manifesto called for a referendum on Proportional Representation (PR), condemning First-Past-the-Post (FPTP) as a "rigged system" that silences voters and distorts democracy. They were right about that, at least.
But as Reform now consistently tops the polls, their tune on FPTP is changing.
Back in February 2025, Nigel Farage admitted his support for PR was never about principle: “First-Past-The-Post can be your enemy,” he said, “but there comes an inversion point at which it becomes your friend.”
He was right. FPTP now threatens to hand Reform unchecked power with a minority of votes, just as it gifted Starmer a Parliamentary landslide on just 34% support. Unlike Starmer, top Reform officials can see the writing on the wall.
Reform’s chairman Zia Yusuf openly embraced FPTP just after their knock-out local elections performance earlier month, declaring: “If PR was ever instituted in this country, we would end up in a state of gridlock… we are firmly in favour of First-Past-The-Post.”
It’s almost as if this was never about democratic reform – just raw political opportunism.
A year ago, PR may have been their lifeline; today, FPTP is quickly becoming Reform’s weapon. And while parties jockey for cynical power grabs, our democracy pays the price.

Why We Need A National Commission on Electoral Reform
This isn’t about helping one party or ideology - it’s about fixing a system that no longer serves the people. Starmer’s government has acknowledged FPTP’s corrosive effect on trust. Yet without action, we’re doomed to repeat the same cycles of distortion and disillusionment.
We need an independent, public-led National Commission on Electoral Reform - a body free from partisan games, tasked with recommending lasting solutions:
* Evaluating PR models used by democracies worldwide
* Engaging the public through deliberation and consultation
* Delivering a roadmap to ensure that every vote counts, every time.
Join us in demanding Starmer act now. Sign our petition, share this message, and let’s create an irrestible public demand for change.
All the best,
Mark Kieran
