Alina Habba, Donald Trump’s personal attorney who was appointed to interim US Attorney of New Jersey, announced on Monday that her office filed charges against Democratic Rep. LaMonica McIver for having "assaulted, impeded, and interfered" with law enforcement. Criminal charges against a sitting member of Congress escalate threats from the Trump administration under an emboldened Justice Department to target his political enemies. Last week, Democratic House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries called federal law enforcement agencies targeting members of Congress a "red line." Feels kinda fascist, doesn't it?

We're all collectively on the hook for a $5 MILLION settlement the Trump administration has awarded to the family of Ashli Babbitt, the Jan. 6 insurrectionist who stormed the US Capitol, repeatedly refused police orders to stand down, smashed her way through barricaded doors just outside the House Speaker's lobby, and was eventually felled by a single bullet fired by a Capitol police officer protecting members of Congress who were fleeing Trump's violent mob at the time. Babbitt once faced criminal charges of reckless endangerment in 2016 for repeatedly smashing her SUV into a vehicle driven by her second husband's ex-girlfriend, became radicalized by absurd QAnon conspiracy theories during Trump's first term, and subsequently joined the thoroughly debunked "Stop the Steal" movement following the 2020 election. Her death was a direct result of her own tragic dissent into far-right, conspiratorial madness, and somehow we're all stuck with the bill to ostensibly provide closure to her family and ease their suffering. Someone please make it make sense.

UN officials are loudly warning that up to 14,000 BABIES COULD DIE in the next few days if aid deliveries do not drastically increase immediately. Tom Fletcher, the Under-Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs and Emergency Relief Coordinator at the UN, said five trucks of aid went into Gaza yesterday, but described this as a "drop in the ocean" and totally inadequate for the population’s needs. Asked how the UN arrived at this figure, Fletcher responded: "We have strong teams on the ground — and of course many of them have been killed… we he still have lots of people on the ground — they're at the medical centers, they're at the schools...trying to assess needs." Israel's continued bombardment and occupation of Gaza, it must once again be stated, has the full financial and military backing of the United States.

Cory Booker turned heads yesterday as the lone Democrat to vote in favor of appointing convicted felon, New Jersey real estate developer, and all-around scumbag Charles Kushner to a posh new post as Donald Trump's ambassador to France. Even Republican Sen. Lisa Murkowski couldn't stomach the thought of supporting Kushner, who once paid $25,000 to have a prostitute seduce and have videotaped sex with his brother-in-law as retribution against his own sister, a cooperating witness in a tax evasion case brought against him by federal prosecutors in the early 2000s. Kushner eventually pleaded guilty to 18 criminal charges and spent two years in prison for his crimes. What a guy. Booker's vote in favor of his Jersey chum makes absolutely no sense, but it does shine a very harsh light on one of the fundamental problems facing the Democratic Party today: we aren't going to beat Republicans and regain the trust of the American electorate if we willfully play the same craven, bullshit games the GOP does and conveniently toss ethics aside when back-slapping opportunity strikes. The moral high ground is made of bedrock, not shifting sands.

At least 50 Venezuelan men sent by the Trump administration to a notorious gulag in El Salvador had entered the United States legally, according to a review by the right-wing, libertarian Cato Institute. "The government calls them all 'illegal aliens.' But of the 90 cases where the method of crossing is known, 50 men report that they came legally to the United States, with advanced US government permission, at an official border crossing point," Cato said in its report. This number aligns with broader trends among Venezuelan migrants, many of whom entered the country either as refugees or through a Biden-era parole program that granted two-year work permits to those with US-based sponsors. "The proportion isn't what matters the most: the astounding absolute numbers are," reads the report. "Dozens of legal immigrants were stripped of their status and imprisoned in El Salvador."
