This National Police Week served as a powerful reminder of the courage and sacrifice of those who protect our communities. I was honored to recognize a Polk County Sheriff’s deputy and Bartow Police officer injured in the line of duty and join fellow members in remembering the fallen. I also worked to advance priorities for our veterans, championed Everglades restoration and celebrated the achievements of FL-18’s talented students, artists and future service academy cadets.

To date, there is no comprehensive national database tracking ambushes and violent attacks against law enforcement, leaving dangerous gaps in understanding where and how these incidents occur. This undermines prevention efforts, officer safety and access to mental health resources. That is why I cosponsored the Improving Law Enforcement Officer Safety and Wellness Through Data Act, which directs the Justice Department to strengthen reporting on officer deaths, injuries and ambushes. State and local barriers continue to prevent qualified current and retired law enforcement officers from carrying nationwide, despite their extensive training and experience. These restrictions undermine public safety and limit officers’ ability to protect the public wherever duty calls. That’s why I supported the LEOSA Reform Act to cut through this red tape and ensure officers can legally carry across state lines. Under current law, retiring federal law enforcement officers cannot purchase their service weapons, even though they carried them for years in defense of our communities. These weapons are more than tools—they are symbols of an officer’s service and sacrifice. That’s why I supported the Federal Law Enforcement Officer Service Weapon Purchase Act to allow retiring officers to purchase their assigned firearms.
