Actions for the week of May 19, 2025
Greetings, Activists!
As corporate greed and compliant policies ramp up attacks on our city and climate, it’s time to meet the moment with equal intensity! Here are some hard-hitting actions to take to support climate action.
Action 1
🚨📣🚲 [Urgent] Call Your Council Member: Biking Is Not a Crime!
Last week, Mayor Adams and NYPD Commissioner Tisch decided that minor traffic violations committed by people on bikes — and only people on bikes — would be escalated to criminal summonses.
This policy change is illogical, cruel, and ineffective, and will only lead to more New Yorkers stuck behind bars, chased by a criminal record, or at risk of deportation.
-
Tell Mayor Adams and Commissioner Tisch: Biking is not a crime!
-
Even better is to call your council member today, and ask them to publicly demand NYPD Commissioner Tisch repeal her criminalization of biking policy. Use your address to look up their number here.
Here’s a script you can use or adapt as your message:
“I am your constituent and a cyclist. I am very concerned by the NYPD’s new policy of giving criminal summonses to people on bikes for minor traffic violations. I am asking you to publicly demand that NYPD Commissioner Tisch repeal her policy criminalizing biking.”
Action 2
🔥📋🤝 Pass the NY HEAT Act NOW!
📆 Friday, May 30 • 1:00 – 2:00 pm Eastern
📍 96th Street subway station (Broadway & W 96th Street, New York, NY) • Map
As New Yorkers face the threats of climate change and rising costs of living, the NY HEAT Act will make energy more affordable while moving off fossil fuels. The NY HEAT Act is our top climate priority, with its promise of lower energy bills while eliminating massive subsidies to the fracked gas industry.
Rally with us on the Upper West Side to call for passage of the NY HEAT Act now!
Action 3
🤑🛢️🫷 NO DEAL for Big Oil Billionaires
📆 Tuesday, June 3
📍 Washington, D.C.
Join People vs. Fossil Fuels, Climate Defenders and others in pushing back on Trump’s dirty budget!
Trump’s billionaire budget is trying to fund handouts to Big Oil, tax cuts for billionaires, and mass detention facilities with our tax dollars. Honestly this is only the tip of the iceberg. Trump’s budget is brimming with proposals that pad the pockets of his wealthy buddies and strip away critical government services we depend on. We’re descending on Washington to say No Deal!
There are many ways to participate, from sharing your story as testimony, participating in non violent direct action, or speaking directly to elected officials and their staff on behalf of your community, and there is support for those who need transportation or housing in DC.
People all over the country are already taking action — we know June will be a critical moment. It’s the climate movement’s moment to throw down and say NO DEAL! Join us in Washington, D.C. on June 3rd.
Bonus Action
🌎⚡️🌻 Climate Organizing Hub Fundraiser
📆 Wednesday, May 21 • 6:00 pm
📍 The Bowery Electric • 327 Bowery, New York, NY • Map
At no point in the past 50 years have fossil fuel billionaires been as powerful as they are today. They spent hundreds of millions to get Trump elected — and now they are demanding a return on their investments: more oil and more gas.
Climate organizing is under attack. This administration is threatening our organizations and doing everything it can to shut down the organizing we desperately need.
Climate Defenders are in their second year of existence, and are very much in start up mode! Over the past two years, they have mobilized over 200,000 people into the climate movement.
On Wednesday, May 21, attend a fundraiser to support this group’s vital work in the fight for climate justice and a Just Transition.
