Alcoa’s Australian refineries have driven the decline of two towns and may have coated their surroundings with dust that residents say tested positive for radioactive elements thorium and uranium. 

Alcoa said there’s no proof the dust in the community is linked to the company’s 150-foot mounds of bauxite residue. Dust tests by a local advocacy group found Alcoa’s dust signature 12 miles from one refinery, near a population center of 100,000 people
