John, let me tell you about my grandfather.
He was born in South Carolina, the child of Jamaican immigrants. When he was just six years old they were chased back to Jamaica by the Ku Klux Klan. But John, my grandfather returned — and he’s one of the most patriotic men I have ever met in my life.
I often find myself asking: what would make him come back to America?
His journey from American exile to American patriot has lessons for all of us who have complex feelings about this country.
First, he taught me that patriotism is not and cannot be a passive activity. The love of your country will be tested in big and small ways.
Second, he taught me that patriotism is not the belief that your country is perfect nor is it the understanding that your country has ever been perfect. Because loving your country is loving its history. That being an American is about struggle and sacrifice, but it’s worth fighting for.
Third, he taught me that skepticism about your country is justified. You should always let skepticism be your companion, but never be your captor. Let the hard truths you’ve learned about America be guides towards a better future, not grudges that will keep you in the past.
These lessons guide me through every day. I know this country is not perfect, but I know we can strive to make it better. That’s what this movement is about.
