Last week, the U.S. Supreme Court heard oral arguments in a case that could let Donald Trump rip away one of our Constitutional rights and permanently weaken our federal courts – and it all started with an illegal executive order.
On his first day back in office, Trump signed an executive order revoking birthright citizenship – a right enshrined in the 14th Amendment – as part of his assault on immigrants. He wants to rewrite the Constitution to advance his inhumane agenda.
Federal courts quickly stepped in. Multiple judges blocked this policy with a nationwide injunction – a court order prohibiting it from being implemented anywhere in the United States. These judges recognized Trump’s action for what it was: a blatantly unconstitutional power grab.
Now, John, this case has reached the Supreme Court, which has a right-wing supermajority with three Trump-appointed justices.
Not only is Trump asking them to greenlight his unlawful attack on our rights — he wants to severely limit judges' ability to place injunctions on his actions going forward.
This is all part of Trump’s plan: flood the courts with illegal executive actions and count on the Supreme Court to side with him so he can consolidate power. It’s authoritarianism, plain and simple, and we the people can’t allow it.
