Finally! After years of the Conservatives damaging our relationship with Europe, today’s reset is a welcome first step towards rebuilding it.
Liberal Democrats have long been leading the charge for a Youth Mobility Scheme to expand opportunities for young people, comprehensive veterinary and plant health agreements to cut red tape and boost trade, and deepening our alliances on defence in the face of Putin’s imperialism and Trump’s unpredictability.
So it’s a relief to see the Government making progress on these – even if today’s deal doesn’t go anywhere near as far as we know it needs to.
I really hope it can be the first step towards repairing the ties of trust, trade and friendship between the UK and the EU that were so badly broken by the Conservatives.
The best way to do that is through a new UK-EU customs union – putting us on the path back to the single market – and we will keep pushing the Government to drop its red line and start negotiations on that.
A better deal with the EU is possible. But it will mean defeating the dinosaurs in Reform and the Conservative Party who just want to drag us back to the nasty Brexit wars of 2016. Already we’re hearing them trying to reopen old battles, instead of focusing on what’s best for Britain’s future.
That’s why our voice is so important. Only we are championing a bold, ambitious plan to fix Britain’s relationship with Europe, boost our economy and improve people’s lives.
