Dear SPUC supporter,
You may already have heard the news.
The House of Commons didn’t vote on the Leadbeater Bill last week, and now the vote won’t take place before 13 June.
This gives us one more month to defeat Assisted Suicide in England and Wales.
And there are real signs we’re turning the tide.
The Liberal Democrat MP Tim Farron captured the mood of the House:
For the mover of a bill to present such a huge number of amendments to their *own* bill suggests a serious lack of confidence in its safety and rigour. In 20 years I’ve not seen anything so shambolic. Even supporters of the bill must surely see that the bill can’t pass like this.
But we’re now entering the most dangerous phase.
The death lobby will use this delay to redouble their efforts. They’ll try to convince MPs that the Bill has been “fixed”.
We must be ready to meet them at every turn—on the streets, in Parliament, in the media, and in every local community.
That means:
• More research
• More lobbying
• More local MP contact
• More media exposure
• More public witness
• More leafleting, in more places
But we have only raised £43,000 of our £90,000 May fundraising goal.
Without your urgent support, I’ll be forced to make difficult choices about where to allocate funds.
That’s because we’re not just fighting one battle.
SPUC must:
• Defeat the Leadbeater Bill in the Commons
• Stop the MacArthur Bill in the Scottish Parliament
• Block the abortion lobby’s attempt to hijack the Crime and Policing Bill to make abortion a “human right”.
Each of these laws would be a once-in-a-generation disaster. Taken together, they pose the greatest threat to innocent human life in British history.
We must win.
Please give whatever you can today.
