Dear Jack,

I hope you are having an excellent week and enjoying the warmer temperatures. As more of us partake in outdoor activities, I enjoy seeing many of you on outdoor paths, at farmers' markets, and in the community. In that spirit of community engagement, stay tuned for new opportunities to meet me at local businesses throughout the district. With that said, welcome to this week's Reaser Report!

Commonwealth Coffee at the US Capitol

Last Thursday, I had the pleasure of joining leaders from across the Commonwealth at the U.S. Capitol for Senator Warner and Senator Kaine's monthly Commonwealth Coffee. I enjoyed connecting with many AAHPI leaders from across the region, including Congressman Suhas Subramanyam of VA-10 and Congressman Bobby Scott of VA-3.

Simultaneously, the Supreme Court was hearing oral arguments on a consequential case regarding the President's executive order blocking birthright citizenship. The Constitution states that all persons born on American soil are bestowed the privileges and responsibilities of citizenship, so the Court heard arguments regarding the legality of the Executive Order.

Leaders doing critical work through Virginia, including people present at the Commonwealth Coffee, would not have been able to contribute to our Commonwealth without birthright citizenship. Immigrants come to America to share their talents, build families, and realize their dreams. The U.S. is a place that has always been strengthened by immigrants, and Virginia is no exception.

Our Communities Are Safer, But We Still Have Work To Do

Click on the image above to read about two major pieces of legislation I carried and passed with broad bipartisan support, which became law this year! HB 2055 and HB 2679 ensure parents of students at-risk for hurting others or themselves are equipped with tools regarding safe firearm storage laws, suicide prevention, and safe medication storage. While we still have major work to do in gun violence prevention, I am proud to have taken these steps to keep our communities and school children safe.

You may recall from earlier newsletters that Professor Andy Block and two of the students at the University of Virginia School of Law's State and Local Government Policy Clinic assisted with research prepping materials and lobbying my colleagues on both sides of the aisle throughout the legislative process. It was a pleasure to work with them and to make progress in community safety. I look forward to returning for another term as your Delegate to continue this important work.

Celebrating Ryan Alam and His Family

Join us on May 23, 2025, at 2 pm for a celebration to honor the outstanding community service of Ryan Alam and his family, who have steadfastly raised awareness about neurodegeneration with brain iron accumulation (NBIA). They have advocated with local healthcare providers, spoken with donors to raise money for the endeavor, and highlighted this debilitating disease. Through their efforts, Ryan and his family raised more than $385,000 for Children's National Hospital's Help Cure NBIA-MPAN fund. We are so proud of what they have accomplished, and would love to see you there to recognize the amazing work they have done in our community.

Speaker's Emergency Committee on the Impact of Federal Workforce and Funding Reductions

Rotating across regions in the Commonwealth to meet in Southwest Virginia (SWVA), this committee continues its investigation into the impacts of recent changes within the federal workforce and cuts to federal funding. The primary concerns raised in SWVA include the impact of federal grant money discontinuation on agriculture, Virginia's largest business, as well as funding loss to non-profits that provide food for the needy in Appalachia. Secondary concerns include cuts in emergency relief funding and personnel. Throughout the past few years, SWVA has been subject to extreme flooding due to various tropical storms and other natural disasters. Most recently, during this winter, SWVA experienced extreme flooding due to the winter storms that occurred throughout January and February.

While the finalized state budget includes a strong investment in flood prevention for SWVA, cutting federal funding for disaster relief will leave our southwestern neighbors more vulnerable to natural disasters. As we continue to examine and understand the magnitude of these cuts, it is important to see how each region of our Commonwealth is individually impacted, alongside how these cuts affect us as a whole.

Resources for Federal Workers

With the recent layoffs conducted by the presidential administration, many families in our community are in limbo regarding where they will find relief or new employment opportunities. My office has put together a resource list for Loudoun County, including state and local relief options for those who have been recently laid off. We will work to update this list with additional services as necessary. Click on the button below to view our page on Resources for Federal Workers.

How My Office Can Help

Navigating state agencies can be confusing and difficult at times. As your delegate, I can help you communicate with state agencies such as the Virginia Employment Commission, Departments of Taxation, Social Services, Transportation, and more! I can also submit inquiries with those agencies on your behalf and help you engage with the state agency you need. There are limits to what I can do, however. For example, I am unable to expedite cases or force state agencies to favor your inquiry, provide legal advice or recommend a specific attorney, intervene with judicial issues, overturn decisions, or be involved with matters involving private businesses.

Whether you want to bring an issue to my attention, need my office’s assistance, or want to invite me to a community event, please reach out! If there is any way I can assist you, please let me know here: https://atoosareaser.com/help/.
