Maybe they should take a moment to ask themselves why Lincoln Square and other independent outlets are so in demand on Substack — while newspapers and cable news channels keep shrinking.

It’s because people are getting news and information they value and are willing to pay for it. (That’s how the free market works, by the way).

And sure, Chris just might still be bitter that CNN fired him. But Washington is full of people who sneer at those of us who are alarmed by what’s happening to our country under Trump — those of us who try to do the right thing, who still believe in the promise of American democracy, and are willing to fight for it. They think we’re suckers and losers.

But there are more of us then there are of them. I truly believe that. You make me believe that every day — with the emails you write us, your thoughtful questions in our live chats and your comments on our social media channels. It’s so inspiring.

Let’s face it: Traditional newsrooms are shackled by shrinking budgets, corporate owners, and a smug culture that prizes “both‑sides” symmetry — even when everyone knows one side is trafficking in lies. Radical‑right outlets exploit that weakness, pumping conspiracies into America’s bloodstream around the clock.

But at Lincoln Square, we don’t answer to billionaires or corporate shareholders. We answer to you. Our editorial north star is courage, not access.

Orwell once said, “In a time of deceit telling the truth is a revolutionary act.” Those are the times we’re living in today.
