Friend —
In her book Dreaming of Home: How We Turn Fear Into Pride, Power, and Real Change, Cristina Jiménez writes a roadmap for finding the power that each of us has within ourselves and our communities to create change.
As an immigrant who grew up undocumented in New York City, Cristina knows what it's like to live in fear of deportation and family separation. But she found her voice and power when she met a community of undocumented youth and immigrant justice organizers who were fighting to stop deportations.
In Dreaming of Home, Cristina writes of the experiences of her family living undocumented in the United States. With vivid details about her father getting pulled over while driving and having an employer abruptly stop paying him, she paints a picture of what life is like for undocumented people. Cristina and her brother were tormented by the fear that they would return home and not find their parents there. They lived in the shadows, in constant dread of making the slightest slip-up that could lead to their family being broken apart by a broken immigration system.
By pairing these anecdotes with compelling data, Cristina pulls back the curtain on the historical facts that created the tangle of immigration policies and politics that is gripping this country today.
But fear will never stop us from finding a home in our families, in our communities, and in the ways we stand up for each other. Since Cristina first co-founded United We Dream, our mission has remained the same:
Empower immigrant youth to advocate for their communities, learn new skills, and mobilize to change their world.
To fuel that mission, Cristina is generously donating proceeds from her book to United We Dream.
