Vicky Hoover: A Sierra Club Outings Legend
Our rich legacy as a historic grassroots organization that brings people outdoors is nothing without our people. The environmental movement has changed throughout the decades, but the commitment of Sierra Club’s volunteers has not. Vicky Hoover, born August 1936 in New York City, has volunteered with the Sierra Club for more than 55 years and has led over 100 outings. From

fighting for the Wilderness Act of 1964 to the California Desert Protection Act, her dedication and advocacy work have helped preserve our public lands for generations. Vicky is still active today as a volunteer, and is the editor of two Sierra Club newsletters.

WATCH: HER WISDOM FOR THE NEXT GENERATION
Leader Feature: Grant BrownWhen Grant Brown’s wife booked a Sierra Club trip for the two of them, he had no idea at the time that he would go on to become a volunteer leader with the program. A retired high school teacher, Grant has a passion for fostering the next generation of nature advocates by leading teen trips and mentoring young adults who are leaders-in-training. Though he has a blast on teen and young adult trips, Grant believes the most special and unique aspect of Sierra Club Outings is our array of service trips. That volunteer work, as well as our adherence and education around Leave No Trace principals, on-trip conservation talks, and focus on environmental advocacy, make him proud to be part of the program. “For most people, in their normal lives, they aren’t around this level of advocacy and environmentalism, so it’s neat to be immersed in that on Sierra Club trips.” Grant says.
Of the many trips he has attended and led, one of Grant’s favorites was

Ancient Trails of the South Rim in the Grand Canyon. The trails on which the group travels are remote, off the beaten path, where you barely see anyone else; it is a beautiful and challenging route.
