On Friday, Governor Walz and United States Senators Amy Klobuchar and Tina Smith traveled to the Two Harbors area in Northeastern Minnesota to survey damage caused by wildfires. The Camp House fire, Jenkins Creek fire, and Munger Shaw fire have impacted an estimated area of over 32,000 acres. Local, state, and federal firefighters, alongside emergency management officials and volunteers are working to contain the fires as gusting winds increase fire activity. Photos from the Governor’s visit are available online.
“The fires across Northern Minnesota have forced families to evacuate and caused severe damage. My thoughts are with those who have had to leave everything behind, and I extend my deepest gratitude to the wildland firefighters, first responders, volunteers, and emergency management officials who are working around the clock to contain these fires,” said Governor Walz. “The state is ready and committed to do everything in our power to respond to and suppress these fires and others across the state, and help impacted communities rebuild.”
Governor Tim Walz and Republican and Democratic legislative leaders reached an agreement this week on state budget targets.
“Amid partisanship and division in Washington, Republicans and Democrats are proving that here in Minnesota we can still work together to get things done,” said Governor Walz. “This agreement will ensure Minnesota continues to be the best place in the country to raise a child, while responsibly addressing long-term structural budget challenges. While we disagree on many things, every person in the negotiating room has the best interest of our state in mind. I want to thank House Speaker Lisa Demuth and Speaker Emerita Melissa Hortman, as well as Senate Leaders Erin Murphy and Mark Johnson, for bringing their passion and ideas to the room and working in good faith to improve the lives of the people we serve.”
On Thursday, Governor Walz attended the Peace Officers Memorial Day ceremony at the Capitol. Governor Walz ordered all United States and Minnesota flags to be flown at half-staff at all state buildings in the State of Minnesota, from sunrise until sunset on Thursday, May 15, 2025, in honor of peace officers who have been killed or injured in the line of duty.
“Today we honor the peace officers who made the ultimate sacrifice to protect our communities, and we thank the 10,000 Minnesota officers who serve in over 400 law enforcement agencies across the state,” said Governor Walz. “Peace officers exemplify resilience, courage, and bravery, and we lower our flags in recognition of their unwavering dedication and sacrifice.”
