News from Representative Bera

Dear John,

As a doctor and your representative in Congress, I strongly oppose the House Republican budget bill that would strip millions of Americans of their health care and food assistance to help pay for tax cuts for billionaires like Elon Musk and Jeff Bezos. These cuts are not just bad policy—they’re dangerous. Your health, security and dignity should never be compromised to benefit the ultra-wealthy.

While I continue working in Washington to protect and deliver for Sacramento, I was proud to welcome Sacramento’s own leaders to the Capitol last week for the 53rd annual Capitol-to-Capitol conference. It was a meaningful opportunity to connect directly with local elected officials, business leaders and community advocates about the region’s top priorities and how I can best support them in Congress.

One message I hear loud and clear from our community is the desire for more direct engagement. That’s why I’m hosting an in-person town hall on Monday, June 2nd at 6PM Pacific Time. This is a great opportunity to ask questions, share your concerns and hear updates about what I’m working on in Congress. Stay tuned for more details soon, and see the save-the-date info below.

Please keep reading below for more on what I’ve been working on — and thank you, as always, for staying informed and engaged. If you’d like real-time updates, I encourage you to follow me on Facebook, Instagram, X, Bluesky and Threads.

Be well,

Fighting to Protect Medicaid

Image

Last week, I joined fellow members of the Democratic Doctors Caucus to call out Republican efforts to gut Medicaid funding and rip health care coverage away from millions of Americans.

Medicaid is more than a health care program—it’s a lifeline for working families, seniors and children across this country.

We will continue fighting tooth and nail to protect this vital program from devastating cuts.

Cap-to-Cap Recap!

Image

Last week, hundreds of local leaders from across the Sacramento region traveled to Washington, D.C. for the 53rd annual Capitol-to-Capitol conference. It was a pleasure meeting with our region’s elected officials, business leaders and community advocates throughout the week as they brought Sacramento County’s priorities directly to the nation’s capital.

This year’s conference comes at a time of real uncertainty in Washington. As President Trump pushes for deep and damaging cuts across the federal government, securing resources for our region is more challenging than ever.

But that won’t stop us. Whether it’s supporting small businesses, improving access to health care, strengthening public safety or investing in water infrastructure and flood protection, I’ll keep working to bring vital federal resources home to Sacramento County. I appreciated the opportunity to connect with so many of our region’s leaders and will continue to be a partner in our shared efforts.

My office has worked tirelessly to bring our Afghan allies to the United States to protect them from persecution from the Taliban.

These brave men and women stood by our troops in Afghanistan—translating, advising and risking their lives to keep our service members safe. We made a promise to protect them in return.

Many of these allies have since resettled in Sacramento County, building new lives and contributing to our community.

It is unconscionable for the Trump Administration to revoke Temporary Protected Status (TPS) and now force many to return to Taliban-controlled Afghanistan, where they could face persecution, imprisonment or even death.
