This week in Washington, Republicans pushed their extreme budget that would cut funding for essential programs like Medicaid and SNAP, all to give tax breaks to billionaires, like Elon Musk. For the #FightingFifth, these cuts to SNAP and Medicaid would weaken the vital support systems that many rely on.
Having grown up in rural Alabama and personally relied on food assistance, I understand the challenges of not having access to basic necessities. The proposed Republican cuts of over $300 billion to SNAP benefits would harm communities across the nation. This action would deprive veterans, children, and families in need of essential food. With current skyrocketing grocery prices, many would face hunger without SNAP. Y’all, our most marginalized here in the Fighting Fifth will feel the impact more than anything.
Let me break this down for what this means for our community. This includes households with children (31.1%), elderly individuals (52.1%), and people with disabilities (41.8%). Our community does not deserve to bear the burden of policies that put the wealthy first. House Democrats understand the struggles of making ends meet and are committed to ensuring you don't have to worry about your next meal.
