Dear John,
Imagine the frustration: you went to the polls, made your voice heard, and helped pass a law for a more just community. Now, imagine a court handpicked by Greg Abbott snatching that victory away.
That's exactly what just happened in Austin and San Marcos. An appeals court has shockingly overruled local judges and struck down marijuana decriminalization policies that we, the voters, overwhelmingly approved. This isn't just about marijuana; it's about power, and whether our voices at the ballot box truly matter.
Texans like us are not backing down. We will be heard.
This week, our executive director Catina Voellinger told the Austin Chronicle:
“We’re going to keep organizing around anger and frustration because the fight isn’t over. We need to make sure that lives aren’t being needlessly ruined for possession of marijuana. At its core, this is about power and who gets to decide what progress looks like. And direct democracy doesn’t bypass government – it should wake it up.”
There's a glimmer of hope we must fiercely protect: KUT News reported that the Austin Police Department will not resume arrests for small amounts of marijuana—for now. This is a crucial, hard-won win. But we know from painful experience that when law enforcement has discretion, it's our Black and brown neighbors who disproportionately pay the price. We cannot let that stand.
This is where you come in. This is where we draw the line, together.
John, the fight to defend these voter-approved wins and build a progressive Texas that truly works for all of us is happening right now, and it's more critical than ever. We are facing powerful interests determined to roll back our progress.
Will you chip in $25, or whatever you can, right now to power our emergency response?
Your immediate support will fuel:
- Our Rapid Response Legal Defense Fund: To challenge this outrageous overreach and protect local, voter-approved laws.
- Urgent Field Organizing: Mobilizing Texans on the ground to hold officials accountable and protect our communities.
- Empowering the Next Wave: Training local leaders and supporting new voter-driven campaigns to reclaim our power.
We're not funded by corporate interests or backroom deals. We run on people power – your power – and yes, maybe a few Texas Billionaire tears along the way. Your contribution, no matter the size, keeps us in this fight even when the odds are stacked against us.
They want us to be demoralized. They want us to give up. Let's show them that Texans don't back down.
Thank you for standing with us,
