A federal judge just sided with Trump, saying he can use a centuries-old law to deport immigrants – despite multiple other courts saying otherwise.
On Tuesday, a Trump-appointed judge sided with the administration, saying it’s legal to invoke the Alien Enemies Act – a 1798 law designed to be used during times of war – to deport Venezuelan immigrants today.
Trump is claiming these immigrants are gang members invading the United States. But other federal judges have ruled there is no evidence of an invasion, and that Trump is blatantly overstepping his authority.
This is what happens when we let the far right seize control of the courts. Trump spent his first term stacking the bench with MAGA loyalists. Now, they’re rubber-stamping his most extreme policies.
Fair-minded judges have been some of our best defenses against Trump’s authoritarian power grabs. That’s why we can’t give up on our courts now.
