In many traditions the soul is equated with the Absolute, God, or Brahman - the deepest dimension of reality. At the Absolute or primordial level of consciousness, there is no relative self. When one enters this Samadhi realm, relative self-structures are left far behind, and one is liberated completely from anything that could be called personal. In the way that Andrew Cohen defines it, the human soul does not exist in this Absolute realm, but rather as a specific metaphysical structure in the human psyche. He describes the soul as the deepest part of the self which remains individuated or personal. The frontal self, the realm of the ego and the personality, is a domain which is completely personal and unique to each individual. While the soul exists at a much deeper dimension than the ego or personality, it is still in the realm of that which is personal. We could say that the soul traces the borders of the personal and the impersonal, the relative and the absolute. Existing as it does at the deepest level of the psyche, the soul has an important relationship with the frontal self. It is the source of spiritual, emotional and psychological strength, and most importantly our capacity for moral virtue. One of the biggest and most important aspects of spiritual practice is the development of the soul, and the cultivation of soul strength – practices which help us to develop a metaphysical foundation of profound and unshakeable moral and spiritual stability. When we inevitably face intense pressure and challenge, if we don’t have this kind of strength and stability at the level of the soul, it is more likely that we will experience a division of the self – a schism or split manifesting within the frontal self or personality. The topic of this week’s teaching is the cultivation of soul strength, and how spiritual practice can help in the development of deep emotional, psychological and spiritual stability.
