Right now, the Trump administration has delayed implementation of an important rule that would take critical steps to protect horses from the cruel act of “soring,” which is the deliberate infliction of pain on horses' legs and hooves to force an exaggerated gait. Despite this setback, we still have an opportunity to put an end to this barbaric practice by passing the Prevent All Soring Tactics (PAST) Act, which has been reintroduced in Congress. But we need your support.

Despite many attempts to ban the practice, soring has continued to persist. Trainers will use caustic chemicals—blistering agents such as mustard oil, diesel fuel and kerosene—and apply them to the horse's front legs and wrap them tightly to “cook” into the skin for days. Heavy chains are then attached to strike against the sore legs; hooves are cut down to the quick; and hard objects are jammed into the tender flesh. All these practices are designed to cause excruciating pain every time the horse steps down, so the leg will be flung high as the horse tries to avoid the pain.

All this pain and suffering, just to try and win a blue ribbon. It's unconscionable and it needs to stop.

The PAST Act would prohibit the use of devices that are integral to this cruelty, eliminate the failed system of industry self-policing and increase penalties for violators. We need your support to take our fight forward and seize this crucial chance to win these lasting protections for horses.
