It’s now or never to stop Congress from slashing almost $1 trillion from Medicaid.

NNU - Medicare for All!

Did you see this?

USA Today: I’m a nurse. If Congress cuts Medicaid and Social Security, my patients will die. The current administration is not trying to find ‘waste’ in the government. They are trying to undermine our public services so they can say, ‘Look they don’t work. We need to privatize them.’

Nancy Hagans, RN, president of the New York State Nurses Association (NYSNA) and National Nurses United (NNU), wrote an op-ed for USA Today sharing her perspective on the GOP’s potential Medicaid and Social Security cuts.

As an ICU nurse of more than 30 years who works at a safety net hospital in Brooklyn, New York, Nancy knows what is at stake if Republicans in Congress move forward with slashing these critical programs to pay for tax cuts for the rich.

84% of all admitted patients at her hospital are on Medicaid or Medicare. If Medicaid is slashed by nearly $1 trillion, Nancy says:

“My patients will be forced to forgo lifesaving care, and they will die. My hospital could face closure entirely or the shuttering of units or services. When patients need open heart surgery, will our facility be able to afford the ECMO machines to keep their hearts and lungs functioning? Every second counts for our trauma patients who won’t survive transfer. The same is true across the country, especially in rural and other underserved communities, where hospitals are already struggling to stay open.”

We recognize that we’ve been reaching out with many requests to call Congress lately, but that’s because this issue is so important, and time is running out.

With Congress finalizing its budget reconciliation bill as we speak, it’s now or never. More than one call to your member of Congress will further build the pressure to reject these devastating cuts.

Please, even if you’ve called already, make a call to your representative now using our hotline (202-978-5357) and urge them to vote against ANY cuts to Medicaid! Feel free to follow our suggested script:

Hi, my name is _______. I am a constituent and I’m a nurse/other health care worker/patient/Medicaid recipient/ally from [ZIP]. I’m calling today to urge you to oppose any cuts to Medicaid. Cuts to Medicaid would take away people’s health care and lead to hospital closures, especially in rural areas, hurting entire communities. This is unacceptable and inhumane. I urge you to vote no on the budget reconciliation bill if it includes any cuts to Medicaid.

This is one of our final chances to say hands off Medicaid, so let’s make it count!

In solidarity,

Nurses’ Campaign to Win Medicare for All
