Dear John,
We’re reaching out because there are growing rumors about possible executive actions [[link removed]] targeting 501(c)(3) organizations, as well as draft language in the federal budgeting process— particularly groups doing critical movement work. If this happens, we know many of our partners and comrades will be at risk, and we’re paying close attention.
Right now, a lot is still unclear. We’re staying grounded by following the leadership of organizations like the ACLU and others with deep legal expertise. We're also staying in touch with national networks monitoring developments closely.
As we learn more, we’ll organize calls to keep RG members updated, share what we’re hearing, and talk about how we can move in solidarity with the organizations and communities most impacted. We’re committed to acting thoughtfully — not fueling fear, but being ready to respond as needed.
Moments like this are a reminder that our work — moving resources and building collective power for the long haul — is essential. Our solidarity and swift mobilization will be critical in whatever comes next.
We're also clear that tax-exempt statuses are not always used for good, and have resulted in the hoarding of trillions of dollars that could otherwise be used for the common good. What we can anticipate is the revocation of status would make our lives even more challenging. We anticipate organizations that support Palestine, Trans Rights, and Immigration to be a the top of the list. (Check out these best donor practices for the times we’re in.) [[link removed]]
We’ll keep you posted as we learn more. There will likely be a delay between any federal/executive action and our response while we lean into community and try to learn from others. In the meantime, let’s keep growing our base and prepare to flank movements however we need to.
From former RG board member, Jason Franklin:
We’ve heard many donors and funders say they are trying to figure out the current state of play before committing their funding, but we know that things will keep shifting. We cannot wait for clarity before we move money. Fund the groups you trust now, trusting that their leadership will use the funds in the best ways possible. Increase your funding for democracy, climate, immigration, LGBTQ rights, and other communities under attack if you can. Renew your support for 2025 and 2026 now to show groups you have their back.
In the meantime, it's our role to find our people and welcome them into our community. Resource Generation Action, our sibling organization, is co-hosting a mass base-building call – Donors Against MAGA: How Donors Can Stand Up to Trump and Musk’s Agenda [[link removed]] – alongside other donor networks on June 11th at 7pm ET. In the spirit of finding and welcoming young people with wealth into our organizing, we invite you to join us [[link removed]] and share the invitation far and wide with your networks and family.
