The all-out assault on wildlife, public lands, and the environment continues, this time in the form of the budget bill making its way through Congress. The proposal from Republicans on the House Natural Resources Committee would let extractive industries destroy hundreds of millions of acres of public lands and offshore waters, imperiling critically endangered species like Rice’s whales in the Gulf of Mexico, polar bears in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge, and beluga whales in Alaska’s Cook Inlet. The bill would also cancel important clean energy investments targeteng the climate crisis — while at the same time reducing fees for corporate polluters. These shortsighted corporate giveaways are intended to fund tax cuts for billionaires.

From oil drilling in the Arctic and Gulf to toxic acid mining near the Boundary Waters of Minnesota to chopping down majestic old-growth trees across the country, this bill would fast-track dirty and destructive plans.

On top of all this, a surprise amendment was added in the middle of the night to sell off more than a half-million acres of public lands in Nevada and Utah for development, pushing sprawling development into places like the habitat of the federally protected desert tortoise and threatening the conservation of natural heritage in the West.

The fate of our cherished landscapes, coastal waters, and imperiled wildlife shouldn’t be dropped into the hands of the highest bidder. Urge your representative to oppose any budget bill that sells out our nation’s wild animals and wild places. [link removed]
