Over the last 20 years, the United States has increased its capacity to lock
people up in jails by almost 40 percent.
This growth is fueled by jail bed rental arrangements, which allow local jails
to profit by renting beds to other county, state, and federal
agencies—including Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE).
Does that seem right to you? Add your name to say “No” jailing for profit.

Right now, the Trump administration’s mass detention and deportation policies
rely on renting space in local jails and holding people in temporary and
private facilities. The more people who are held, the more the counties renting
out their beds rake in.
County budgets should not depend on locking people up. Local officials need to
invest in community-based alternatives.
