Dear Friend,
When Elizabeth May was first elected in May 2011, national media commentators said, "The Green Party may be pleased to have won a seat, but no one will ever hear of Elizabeth May again. One MP cannot accomplish anything."
That is true for MPs elected in the status quo top-down parties, where every vote is on party lines and every word is scripted by party back rooms. But Greens are different. Our values are different. And our work is primarily for the public good, focusing on what constituents want their MP to accomplish.
Greens are not interested in hyper-partisanship or pointless games. That is why with one Green seat between 2011 and 2019, Elizabeth was elected by her peers as the 2012 Parliamentarian of the Year, and succeeded in getting a major health legislation, her first private members bill, to create a federal strategy to address Lyme disease passed in 2014.
Since then, she has succeeded in getting two more bills passed into law:
- Confronting Environmental Racism and putting in place a strategy for Environmental Justice: Bill C-226. This bill passed through both chambers and became law in June 2025.
- Animal Welfare: Bill S-203, received Royal Assent in 2019. Sponsored by Elizabeth in the House, this bill bans keeping whales, porpoises, and dolphins in captivity. It is globally groundbreaking as the first animal welfare legislation to require the law to consider the best interests of an individual animal. It was a historic win for marine life and a major step forward for Canada.
Beyond these bills, Elizabeth has tabled more amendments to legislation than any MP in Canadian history and has intervened more than any other MP of any party in demanding climate action, protection of the natural world, peace, and social justice.
With Parliament resuming on May 26, she’s ready to do it again. Elizabeth will be the first person to say that everything she accomplishes is grounded in a movement. We need to elect more Green MPs, and to do that we need to be ready for the next election, likely less than two years from now. To ensure the health of Canada's democracy, the Green Party will launch a national grassroots campaign to adopt fair voting. We’ve set a goal to raise $100,000 before May 26, and we’re counting on grassroots donors like you to help us get there.

Every dollar makes a difference, because we know how to make every seat count. Let’s keep building on what we’ve accomplished—together.
With gratitude and determination,
The Green Party of Canada
