NBC News: Major corporate interests and megadonors gave $239 million to fund Trump's inauguration

President Donald Trump’s inauguration fund raised $239 million—more than double the previous record from 2017.

Much of this major fundraising haul came from companies who had business in front of the administration and donors who Trump eventually tapped for government positions.

This poses a major corruption risk, John, and it undermines Americans’ trust in our government.

But thankfully, there’s a solution.

The Inaugural Fund Integrity Act would set up guardrails to limit the size of these donations and increase transparency by requiring disclosure of expenditures.

Unlike for political campaigns, right now, there are no limits on contributions to inaugural committees, giving donors the power to donate millions and gain influence over the incoming president.

Several of the top donors to Trump’s inaugural fund were given roles in his administration—like Education Secretary Linda McMahon, Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent, Trump’s nominee for ambassador to the United Kingdom Warren Stephens and Jared Isaacman, Trump’s nominee for NASA administrator—just to name a few.

Big agriculture, oil and cryptocurrency companies also gave millions. In return, the Trump administration has enacted extremely favorable policies towards those industries—such as disbanding a Justice Department unit that investigated fraud in the crypto industry.

By donating to Trump’s inaugural fund, wealthy donors and corporations have been able to curry favor with the administration.

Americans should not have to worry that the president is acting on behalf of his wealthy donors rather than their best interests.

It’s time for Congress to pass legislation to establish contribution limits, increase transparency and ensure the president’s influence can’t be bought as he’s taking office.
