Friends,

As we push forward in the 89th Legislative Session, I’m incredibly proud to represent HD 136 in the Texas House. The outpouring of advocacy from community members across Austin, Cedar Park, and Round Rock has been truly inspiring. Your voices matter, and I encourage you to stay engaged as we approach the end of the session.

In this edition of our newsletter, you’ll find the latest updates on legislation, community events, and helpful local resources. If you have any questions, suggestions, or need assistance, don’t hesitate to reach out. My office is here to serve you, and I’m always eager to hear from you!

All the best,

John Bucy III

State Representative

Texas House District 136

As the legislative session progresses, I wanted to briefly update you on the important work being done on behalf of all Texans.

The House of Representatives will continue meeting regularly through June 2nd, and I’ll keep pushing for real solutions that improve Texans’ lives—and I won’t back down when extremist bills try to strip away our rights. I'm proud to have authored one of the first ten bills to pass out of the House (HB 1392), have sent two additional pieces of legislation to the Governor so far, and have laid out 24 bills across various committees, each aimed at improving life for Texans.

My priorities are straightforward: ensuring every child has access to affordable healthcare, fully funding our public schools, protecting voting rights, increasing housing and transit options, and expanding access to job training and higher education. I’m also working with colleagues to safeguard reproductive freedom, advance sensible cannabis policies, advocate for pay raises and pension increases for our dedicated state employees, and strengthen support services for our unhoused neighbors.

The road ahead is challenging, but with your support and the dedication of my colleagues, I am confident we can make meaningful progress. Thank you for entrusting me with the responsibility of representing you and working toward a stronger Texas.

Texas House Republicans have pushed through a private school voucher scheme that siphons public tax dollars away from our already underfunded public schools—benefiting fewer than 1% of current public or homeschooled students.

After rejecting our proposal to let Texans vote on the issue, they chose to bypass public input and funnel funds into unaccountable private institutions. Then, to make matters worse, they killed my amendment that would’ve made sure vouchers only went to lower-income families—confirming this scheme is just a tax break for the wealthy.

This bill, recently signed into law by Governor Abbott, is a blatant disregard for the will and needs of Texas families. Though the damage to districts like Round Rock ISD and Leander ISD may be significant, we must stay focused on using the rest of this session to fight for what’s right.

I proudly voted in favor of HB 2, a bill aimed at delivering $8 Billion in critical funding to our public schools. While this legislation is a step in the right direction, it falls far short of what's needed—Texas schools are facing a staggering $15 billion funding gap due to inflation and years of legislative neglect. Despite this urgent crisis, Lt. Governor Dan Patrick has refused to take action for weeks and is only now giving the bill a hearing. Our students, teachers, and communities cannot afford further delay or any more reductions in funding. Contact the Senate and demand they act now to pass meaningful public school funding.

Celebrating with the Arc of Texas

We have sent HB 2081 to the Governor's desk! I deeply admire the Arc of Texas for their powerful advocacy and partnership in helping move this bill forward. Their dedication has been instrumental in advancing legislation that will expand higher education opportunities for students with intellectual and developmental disabilities.

Firefly Moon Landing
I'm deeply grateful for Firefly and NASA's hard work supporting our HD 136 community and space exploration. It was an honor to celebrate the successful Firefly Moon landing, a milestone that showcases their dedication and innovation. I'm excited to keep investing in our area's growing space industry, ensuring we remain at the forefront of this journey.

It was an incredible opportunity to engage with parents and educators from across the district, including those from Pond Springs Elementary. I am proud to stand with public schools and deeply appreciate their unwavering commitment to defeating SB 2 and HB 3.
